What is Smart Plant / Smart P&ID?

  • Smart Plant/Smart P&ID (now part of Hexagon P&ID, formerly by Intergraph) is a specialized engineering software tool used to create, manage, and maintain intelligent piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). It is widely adopted in the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Power, and other Process industries for designing complex piping systems.

  • Smart Plant P&ID is a data-centric, rule-driven design environment that allows engineers to create schematic representations of process systems. Unlike traditional drafting tools, Smart Plant P&ID ties diagrammatic elements (like valves, pumps, pipelines) to a database, allowing for better data management, consistency, and automation.

Uses and Purposes in the Oil & Gas Sector

  • Creating Intelligent P&IDs
     Engineers use Smart Plant P&ID to design piping and instrumentation diagrams that are "intelligent" — every object contains metadata and is connected to a relational database.
